Speedboats get you to Phi Phi faster — but they also bounce hard in open water, leave passengers feeling sick before they even arrive, and offer no space, no shade, and no onboard facilities. For families with children, older travellers, and anyone who values arriving at a beautiful island feeling well rather than wrecked, the big boat is the right choice.

The Sea Angel Beyond is a purpose-built multi-deck luxury ferry with air-conditioned cabins on every level, clean restrooms, open-air sun decks with panoramic views, and staff serving refreshments throughout the crossing. It accommodates up to 300 passengers across three clearly separated class areas — Gold, Silver, and Standard — so you get exactly the experience you pay for.

    What Actually Happens

    1

Morning Pickup and Pier Check-In (07:00–08:30)

Your day begins comfortably, not chaotically. Between 07:00 and 07:30, your driver arrives at your Phuket hotel lobby in a clean air-conditioned minibus. You don't need to navigate tuk-tuks, taxis, or confusing pier directions — we handle everything from your door. The drive to the Sea Angel private pier takes around 30 minutes depending on your hotel zone, and you'll arrive at the pier with time to spare before the boat departs. At the pier, check-in opens at 08:00. Staff assign you a sticker for your seat in your booked class — Gold, Silver, or Standard — so there is no uncertainty about where you sit. Your guide introduces the full day program clearly: where the boat goes, what activities happen, what safety procedures to follow, and practical information about the National Park fee you pay here in cash (฿400/adult). Complimentary tea, coffee, and fresh fruit are served while you wait. This briefing moment matters more than many travellers expect. The guide will explain that Maya Bay is a scenic sightseeing stop from the boat deck — you don't physically land there — so you know exactly what to anticipate. Understanding this ahead of time means you can enjoy the views rather than feel surprised. The Andaman Sea on a calm morning looks extraordinary from the open deck: flat turquoise water stretching to the horizon with Phuket's hills fading behind you. By the time the engines start at 08:45, you are relaxed, seated, and genuinely looking forward to what's ahead.

    2

Crossing the Andaman Sea on the Big Boat (08:45–10:00)

The Sea Angel Beyond is not a typical ferry — it is a purpose-built multi-deck luxury vessel designed specifically for this route. The crossing from Phuket to Phi Phi takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and on a big boat, that journey is a pleasure rather than an ordeal. Standard Class passengers sit in wide air-conditioned seats on the lower deck with large windows. Silver Class guests relax in premium recliner chairs in a private sea-view room on the second floor, with soft drinks and snacks included. Gold Class is the showpiece: 50 electric massage seats arranged in an upper-deck lounge with panoramic sea views, a private outdoor zone, complimentary food and drinks flowing throughout the trip, and a secured private room that only Gold Class passengers can access with a key card. On all three decks, the boat's size does the heavy lifting. Where a speedboat crashes and jolts over Andaman swells — particularly during May to October low season when winds pick up — the big boat rides through the same water with a slow, gentle roll. Families with young children can move around the cabin safely. Older travellers don't need to brace themselves for impact. The open sun deck is accessible throughout the crossing if you want fresh air and photos of the open sea. Crew members circulate with refreshments. The sea south of Phuket is often so clear you can watch the water colour deepen from pale green to vivid blue as the depth increases. By the time the first limestone islands of the Phi Phi archipelago appear on the horizon — typically around 10:00 — the Andaman crossing itself has been one of the highlights.

    3

Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave (10:00–12:00)

The Phi Phi Islands became world-famous after Maya Bay appeared as the setting for the 2000 Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach. Today the bay is carefully managed by the Thai National Park authorities — boats do not land at Maya Bay to protect the recovering coral reefs, but the big boat passes close enough for outstanding photographs and full appreciation of the sheer theatre of the location. Tall limestone cliffs rise directly from the sea, draped with tropical forest, framing a perfect arc of white sand beach visible from the water. From Maya Bay, the ferry moves to Pileh Lagoon — a sheltered emerald-green lagoon enclosed entirely by towering limestone walls. The colour of the water here is genuinely breathtaking: a vivid, almost fluorescent teal caused by the depth and mineral content of the sea. You view Pileh Lagoon from the boat deck, which gives an excellent overview of the entire enclosed space. Many travellers say this stop produces their favourite photographs of the whole trip. Next comes Viking Cave — a vast sea cave located on Phi Phi Leh island, locally known as Tham Phaya Nak. The cave gets its name from the ancient paintings found on its eastern and southern walls, believed to be centuries old. Today, bamboo scaffolding clings to the cave walls where local workers harvest edible swallow nests — a practice that has continued for generations and provides a striking visual before the ferry moves on to Monkey Beach. Monkey Beach is a small crescent of sand where a colony of wild macaque monkeys has made a permanent home. You can observe them from the boat — a favourite moment with children — without the disturbance of direct contact.

    4

Snorkeling and Buffet Lunch on Phi Phi Don (12:00–15:15)

After the sightseeing loop of Phi Phi Leh, the ferry moves to the snorkeling area where your guide distributes equipment — mask, fins, and life jacket — to all passengers who want to enter the water. The snorkeling here takes place in calm, shallow water over coral reef populated by parrotfish, sergeant-major fish, and occasional reef sharks. The visibility in this part of the Andaman Sea is typically 5–10 metres on a calm day, making it a genuinely impressive snorkeling experience even for beginners. Guests who prefer not to snorkel can remain on the boat, relax on the sun deck, or simply enjoy the views from the cabin. The life jacket is available for all swimmers regardless of swimming ability — the guide and crew supervise the water throughout. Children enjoy the snorkeling enormously; the fish here are accustomed to divers and often swim very close. Around 13:15, the ferry docks at Tonsai Pier on Phi Phi Don for the buffet lunch. Sea Society is a beach-facing restaurant right at the waterfront — your buffet is included in your tour price, featuring a selection of Thai and international dishes. You have approximately two hours at Phi Phi Don, giving you time to eat at your own pace, explore the village's beachside shops, swim off the beach, or simply sit with a cold drink watching the longtail boats move in and out of the bay. Phi Phi Don itself is worth exploring briefly — the island is a five-minute walk across at its narrowest point, with both the Andaman side and Tonsai Bay side accessible on foot. The combination of the buffet, the beach, and a gentle wander through the village makes this a genuine lunch break, not just a rushed refuel.

    5

Return Crossing and Drop-Off at Your Hotel (15:15–17:30)

At 15:15, the ferry departs Phi Phi Don and begins the return crossing to Phuket. The afternoon return across the Andaman Sea is typically calmer than the morning, and the low angle of the afternoon sun turns the water a rich, glittering gold. On the big boat, the return journey is as comfortable as the departure — you are back in your class seat with soft drinks available, the crew attentive, and the open deck available for photos of the passing islands. The ferry arrives at the Sea Angel pier in Phuket at approximately 17:00. Your minibus transfers you back to your hotel, arriving by around 17:30 depending on your zone. This gives you the entire evening free in Phuket — early enough for a relaxed dinner, a stroll along the beach, or an evening show. The big boat schedule is particularly practical for families. Children are back at the hotel before they become overtired, parents have had a comfortable day without the physical stress of a speedboat, and everyone arrives having actually enjoyed the crossing rather than just endured it. If you want to extend your time on the islands, we can arrange overnight stays on Phi Phi Don instead of the return ferry — contact us on WhatsApp to discuss options. For travellers planning multiple days in Phuket, this tour pairs well with our other Phuket excursions — ask us about combining Phi Phi with a Phang Nga Bay or James Bond Island day trip.

    Is This Right for You?

    Families with children

The big boat is the single best choice for families visiting Phi Phi Islands. Young children can move around the cabin safely without the cramped, bouncy conditions of a speedboat. The wide seats and air-conditioned cabin keep children comfortable throughout the 1.5–2 hour crossing, and the snorkeling area is calm and shallow — perfect for kids experiencing coral reef swimming for the first time. Children aged 4–10 travel at the child rate, and children under 3 years are free.

    Travellers prone to seasickness

If choppy water worries you, the big boat removes most of that anxiety. The Sea Angel Beyond is a large, heavy vessel — its size means it absorbs Andaman swells rather than crashing over them. Travellers who have suffered badly on speedboats regularly report that the big boat crossing felt smooth and comfortable throughout. We still recommend taking seasickness tablets 30 minutes before boarding as a precaution, particularly during May–October low season when seas can be rougher.

Older travellers and those with limited mobility

The big boat's stable platform, wide seating, clean onboard restrooms, and helpful crew make it the practical choice for travellers in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. You don't need to climb in and out of a low speedboat, balance on a rocking vessel, or sit on a hard bench for two hours. Staff assist passengers when boarding and disembarking. Gold Class and Silver Class both provide premium comfortable seating that makes the full day genuinely relaxing rather than tiring.

    Couples and honeymooners

Gold Class in particular is a genuinely romantic way to visit Phi Phi Islands. The electric massage seats, private sea-view room with key card access, panoramic upper deck, and included food and drinks create a premium experience that feels far removed from a packed group speedboat. If you want to arrive at Maya Bay feeling luxurious and unhurried, Gold Class on the big boat is a better use of ฿3,100 than most alternatives at that price point.

First-time visitors to Phi Phi Islands

If this is your first visit to Phi Phi, the big boat's full-day itinerary — Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, snorkeling, and a beach lunch — covers everything you need to see and do in a single well-structured day. The English-speaking guide explains the significance of each location clearly, from the history of Viking Cave to why Maya Bay is managed the way it is today. You arrive informed, comfortable, and with beautiful memories of one of Thailand's most iconic natural settings.

    What Our Guests Say

"We chose the big boat because our kids get carsick, and it was the perfect decision. The Gold Class seats were incredible — my children spent the crossing talking about the electric chairs more than the islands! Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon were absolutely stunning. The buffet lunch was generous and the guides were patient with our little ones at the snorkeling stop. Will book with Trip Thai Tour again."

"We'd heard horror stories about rough speedboat rides to Phi Phi. The big boat was completely different — smooth, comfortable, and actually enjoyable. Silver Class gave us great seats and a sea view room to ourselves. Pileh Lagoon is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Chatree's team were responsive on WhatsApp and pickup was exactly on time."

    J
James & Helen T.London, United KingdomCouple

"My parents are in their 60s and I was worried about the boat crossing. The big ferry was the right call — stable, spacious, and the crew helped my mum on and off without any fuss. Standard Class was comfortable and the lunch at Phi Phi Don was excellent. The snorkeling was a highlight for the whole family. Very good value for money compared to what we paid for similar tours on our last trip."

    Questions

A speedboat reaches Phi Phi in around 45 minutes but gives a rough, bouncy ride that causes seasickness in many travellers, especially during May–October when Andaman swells are higher. The big boat (Sea Angel Beyond luxury ferry) takes 1.5–2 hours but provides a dramatically smoother, more comfortable crossing with spacious air-conditioned seating, onboard restrooms, and crew service throughout.

For families with children, older travellers, and anyone prone to motion sickness, the big boat is consistently the recommended choice. You arrive at Phi Phi Islands feeling well and relaxed rather than exhausted from the crossing.

All three class options include: round-trip big boat ferry (your chosen class), buffet lunch at Sea Society restaurant on Phi Phi Don, snorkeling equipment (mask, fins, life jacket), accident insurance, English-speaking guide, and hotel pickup and drop-off across most Phuket zones.

Gold Class additionally includes food and soft drinks flowing throughout the day on board, first-priority service at all stops, access to a private outdoor zone, and a private key card room on the upper deck. The National Park fee of ฿400/adult is not included and is paid in cash at the pier — we always tell you this upfront.

Standard Class is the spacious air-conditioned lower deck cabin with wide comfortable seats and large windows. Silver Class is located on the second floor in a private sea-view room with premium recliner seats, complimentary coffee, tea, soft drinks, and snacks. Gold Class is the top-floor Super VIP lounge with just 50 electric massage seats, food and soft drinks on board throughout the day, first-priority service, a private outdoor zone, and a private key card room.

All three classes join the same tour itinerary — the same Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, snorkeling, and lunch. The difference is your comfort level during the crossing and your onboard experience.

No — the National Park entry fee of ฿400 per adult and ฿200 per child (4–10 years) is paid separately in cash at the pier before departure. This fee is paid directly to Thai government staff and is required to enter snorkeling and swimming areas at Phi Phi Islands. If you only want to do scenic sightseeing from the boat without entering the water, there is no park fee.

We always disclose this fee upfront — it is not a hidden charge. Please bring Thai Baht cash. ATMs are available near the pier if needed.

Yes — the big boat is the best Phi Phi tour option for families with children. The stable, spacious ferry means children can move around safely, the air-conditioned cabin keeps them comfortable, and the snorkeling area is calm and shallow with life jackets provided. Children aged 4–10 travel at the child rate, and children under 3 years are free of charge (must sit on a parent's lap during sailing).

The tour is not recommended for children under 1 year old. Pregnant women and guests with serious heart conditions or severe medical conditions should not participate.

Hotel pickup is between 07:00 and 07:30. The ferry departs from the Sea Angel private pier at 08:45. The boat returns to Phuket pier at approximately 17:00, and you are back at your hotel by around 17:30 depending on your zone. The full day is approximately 10 hours from pickup to drop-off.

This schedule gives you the full evening free in Phuket for dinner and activities.

No — Maya Bay is a protected area managed by Thai National Park authorities. All boats pass Maya Bay for sightseeing from the water but do not land there. This applies to all tours, both speedboat and big boat. The bay is clearly visible and photographable from the boat deck.

This restriction was implemented to allow Maya Bay's coral reef ecosystem to recover after years of heavy visitor impact. The snorkeling stop on this tour takes place at a different location with excellent coral and marine life.

Hotel pickup is included for most central Phuket areas at no additional charge. Outer zones including Rawai Beach, Tri Trang, Cape Panwa, Bang Tao Beach, Kamala Beach, Surin Beach, Naithon, and Naiyang Beach are subject to an additional transfer fee ranging from ฿100–1,500 depending on the zone.

Contact us on WhatsApp with your hotel name before booking and we will confirm your exact pickup charge upfront — no surprises on the day.

The big boat is specifically recommended for travellers who are prone to motion sickness. Its size and weight mean it absorbs Andaman Sea swells significantly better than a speedboat, providing a much smoother and more comfortable crossing. Many travellers who have been badly seasick on speedboats report no problems at all on the big boat.

We still recommend taking seasickness tablets 30 minutes before boarding as a precaution, especially if you are travelling during May–October when seas can be rougher. If in doubt, choose Gold Class or Silver Class where you can recline and rest more comfortably during the crossing.

Gold Class at ฿3,100/adult costs ฿1,300 more than Standard Class at ฿1,800/adult. For that extra cost you get electric massage seats, included food and drinks throughout the day, first-priority service at all stops, access to a private outdoor zone, and a private key card room — plus only 50 seats in the entire lounge, meaning less crowding.

For couples and honeymooners, or families wanting a premium experience, Gold Class is genuinely excellent value relative to what a similar experience costs elsewhere in Phuket. For budget-conscious travellers, Standard Class provides very comfortable seating and all the core inclusions.

A cancellation fee of 100% applies if the booking is cancelled 2 days (48 hours) or less before the tour date. For cancellations made more than 2 days in advance, please contact us via WhatsApp to arrange a refund or reschedule.

We do not cancel confirmed bookings due to low numbers. Your booking runs as confirmed.

Yes — the Phi Phi big boat tour returns to your hotel by 17:30, leaving your evening completely free. It pairs well with an evening at Patong Beach, a Thai cooking class, or a Phuket Old Town walking tour on a separate day.

If you are planning multiple days in Phuket, we can build a full itinerary that combines Phi Phi Islands with Phang Nga Bay, James Bond Island, or a Krabi day trip. Contact us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and we will put together a package.
