In the jungle above Mae Nam, there is a moment that surprises almost every visitor: you hold out a bunch of bananas and an elephant as tall as a truck reaches its trunk toward your open hand, so gently that you forget for a second how large she is. That is the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Koh Samui — and it takes about thirty seconds to understand why people describe it as the best thing they did in Thailand.

This half day tour pairs you with rescued Asian elephants for three to four hours of genuine hands-on interaction — feeding, walking alongside them through the jungle, watching them play in the mud, and helping bathe them at the outdoor shower area. The elephants here were rescued from logging and tourism industries. No riding, no performances, no chains, no hooks. An English-speaking guide stays with you throughout and introduces each elephant by name and rescue story. A traditional Thai lunch is served at the sanctuary before you return to your hotel.

From ฿2,800 per adult. Free hotel pickup included from all areas of Koh Samui. Morning and afternoon sessions available daily. Suitable for families, couples, solo travellers, and all age groups including young children and seniors. Book via WhatsApp +66 89 949 6235 — we confirm your session and exact pickup time the same day.

  • Feed rescued Asian elephants by hand with bananas and sugar cane, then help prepare their natural dietary supplements — a hands-on activity that goes deeper than standard sanctuary visits
  • Mud spa session — watch and join as the elephants roll and play in the mud. One of the most-photographed moments of any Koh Samui visit and a core natural behaviour for Asian elephants
  • Traditional Thai lunch (morning session) or Thai dinner (afternoon session) included — freshly cooked Pad Thai, rice, and seasonal fruit. No hidden food charges

The most common mistake tourists make on Koh Samui is booking an 'elephant experience' through a hotel desk or OTA without checking the operator's welfare policy. Some camps on the island still use hooks, chains, and riding — practices that cause lasting physical and psychological harm to the animals. The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary operates under a strict welfare framework: no riding, no chains, no performances, and no tools of punishment.

What sets this experience apart from other ethical sanctuaries is the depth of interaction. You are not watching elephants from a roped-off platform — you are walking beside them, feeding them, preparing their food, and bathing them. The mahouts and guides have personal relationships with each elephant and share specific rescue stories. It changes the way you see the animals.

    What Actually Happens

    1

Pickup, the Drive, and Arrival at Mae Nam

Your driver arrives at your hotel lobby at the agreed time — between 8:00 and 9:00 AM for the morning session, or 12:15 to 12:45 PM for the afternoon. The drive from most Koh Samui hotels takes between 20 and 50 minutes depending on where you are staying, and the landscape shifts noticeably as you head toward the north of the island. The beach resorts and busy roads of Chaweng give way to quieter hillside roads as you approach Mae Nam. The sanctuary sits in forested land above the main coastal strip — you will hear birdsong before you see the gate. When you arrive, a staff member greets your group and brings you inside for a welcome drink of tea, coffee, or water with a light snack. This is not just a formality. It is a deliberate pause to let the elephants hear and smell your presence from a distance before your guide brings you face to face with them. The arrival process takes around 15 minutes. Your English-speaking guide uses this time to walk you through the day's schedule, explain the welfare rules — no approaching from behind, no sudden movements, no running — and answer any questions you have. You also watch a short safety video. By the time you stand up to walk toward the elephants, you already know their names, their ages, and where each one came from. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary has operated in Thailand since 2014, opening its first location in Chiang Mai before expanding to Koh Samui, Phuket, and Pattaya. The Mae Nam site is one of two EJS camps on Koh Samui, each caring for multiple rescued animals with documented welfare histories.

    2

Preparing the Elephants' Food — the Part Most Visitors Don't Expect

Before the elephants appear, your guide brings your group to a preparation table where the mahouts are already working. You are handed a mixture of herbs, vitamins, minerals, rice, and tamarind — the ingredients for the elephants' daily dietary supplements. Your task is to press and pack these into dense balls about the size of a large orange. The elephants will eat them whole. It sounds simple. It takes more grip strength than you expect, and by the time your balls are ready the elephants are already visible from the tree line, watching. This activity matters because it is exactly how the mahouts care for the elephants every day. By joining in, you become part of the elephants' daily routine rather than a spectator standing outside it. Your guide explains what each ingredient does: turmeric supports joint health in older elephants, tamarind aids digestion, and the vitamin blend compensates for what a rescued elephant misses compared to a fully wild diet. Asian elephants eat for 12 to 18 hours a day in the wild, consuming up to 150 kilograms of vegetation. In a sanctuary setting the mahouts must supplement their diet carefully to maintain the same nutritional range. By the end of preparation you understand something specific about these animals — their age, their health needs, what they need from you today — that you could not have absorbed from a sign on a fence. It changes the feeding session that follows in a way that is difficult to explain and easy to feel.

    3

Feeding Time — What it Feels Like Up Close

The first elephant approaches along the jungle path with the kind of slow confidence that only very large animals carry. Your guide introduces her by name and tells you her story — how long she worked in the logging industry, the condition she was in when she arrived, how many years she has been at the sanctuary. Then the guide hands you a bunch of bananas and says: hold them out, palm flat. What happens next is one of those travel moments that resists easy description. The elephant's trunk — roughly 1.5 metres long and capable of lifting a 300-kilogram log — reaches toward your open hand with a precision that feels impossible given its size. She takes the bananas one by one, curling the tip of her trunk around each fruit. You can feel the warmth and the breath and the extraordinary gentleness of an animal that could upend a car choosing to take food from your fingers carefully. You will feed each elephant in the group — typically two to four animals depending on the session and the day. Between feedings, the guides stay alongside and encourage questions. How old is she? Can they communicate with each other? Do they remember the camps they came from? The answers are detailed and often unexpected: Asian elephants live up to 70 years in sanctuary conditions and are among the few non-human animals with documented long-term memory. The bond between a mahout and his elephant is typically lifelong — some relationships span decades. By the end of feeding, your supplement balls are gone and the elephants are looking at you the way animals look at people they have decided they like.

    4

The Mud Spa and Elephant Bathing

The walk to the mud pool takes around ten minutes through jungle terrain. Your guide leads the way and the elephants follow at their own pace — slower and more deliberate than you expect, pausing occasionally to investigate plants with their trunks or rumble to each other at frequencies below the range of human hearing. The path winds through mature trees and undergrowth. You are not on a groomed tourist trail. You are walking through a working jungle sanctuary. The mud pool is a natural depression filled with thick grey-brown mud. When the first elephant reaches it she lowers herself in without ceremony and begins to roll. This is not a trained performance. Mud bathing is a core behaviour of wild Asian elephants: it cools the skin, acts as a natural sunscreen against the tropical sun, and protects against insect bites. Watching a four-tonne animal play in the mud with visible pleasure is genuinely funny and genuinely moving at the same time. If you are willing to get dirty — and your guide will ask — you can enter the pool alongside her. Most people do. After the mud spa, the group walks to the outdoor elephant shower, where you collect buckets of water and pour them over the elephants while the mahouts use soft brushes to clean the hardest-to-reach spots. The elephants lean into the water. They enjoy it. The whole bathing section takes 30 to 45 minutes and produces more photographs than any other part of the experience. The in-house photographer is especially active here. A change of clothes is essential — you will need it. Shower facilities are available at the sanctuary before the meal.

    5

Thai Lunch, Goodbye, and Your Afternoon Free

After bathing, you return to the sanctuary's dining area where the kitchen team has been cooking while you were with the elephants. Lunch in the morning session — or dinner in the afternoon — is a traditional Thai spread: freshly cooked Pad Thai, steamed jasmine rice, seasonal vegetables, and tropical fruit. It is served at long tables in an open-sided sala. Your guide and some of the mahouts often eat with the group, which means the conversation continues — follow-up questions about elephant welfare in Thailand, what happens to working elephants when their mahouts can no longer care for them, or simply the easy kind of conversation between people who have shared something unusual together. Lunch takes around 30 to 45 minutes. After that, your driver is waiting to return you to your hotel. Morning session guests are typically back at their hotel by 12:30 PM, leaving the full afternoon free for the beach, a massage, a snorkelling trip, or another activity from our Koh Samui tours page. Afternoon session guests return in the early evening. If your flight or ferry departs after the tour ends and you need a drop-off at Samui International Airport or the pier rather than your hotel, this can be arranged in advance for 500–800 THB per group depending on distance. Let us know when you book via WhatsApp and your driver will take you directly. For a multi-day itinerary that combines this sanctuary visit with Koh Samui's other highlights, see our Koh Samui tour packages.

    Is This Right for You?

Families with children aged 6 and above

This is one of the most consistently praised family activities on Koh Samui. Children aged 6 and above can participate fully in all activities — feeding, supplement preparation, the mud spa, and bathing. The guides are experienced with children and pace the group accordingly. Children under 6 are welcome with close parental supervision. Dozens of parent reviews describe their children's first elephant feeding as a memory that outlasts every beach day of the trip.

    Couples and honeymooners

The intimate small-group format and the emotional weight of each elephant's rescue story make this a surprisingly affecting experience for couples. The mud spa and bathing sessions are chaotic and fun in a way that removes any remaining formality between people. If you have debated whether an elephant sanctuary is worth a half day of your trip, the answer at an ethical operation like EJS is that it belongs in a different category of experience entirely.

Solo travellers and ethical animal lovers

The guided group format means you are never alone. Solo travellers in reviews consistently praise the friendly atmosphere and the connection they felt with other guests and the guides. For travellers who have specifically sought out an ethical elephant experience and want to understand the real difference between a welfare sanctuary and a riding camp, this visit answers every question directly — your guide explains the EJS welfare framework and rescue process in full.

Indian families, groups, and multi-generational travellers

The sanctuary accommodates groups of all sizes and the Thai meal format works well for families travelling with grandparents or older relatives. The jungle terrain is manageable for most fitness levels — guests in their 60s and 70s complete the walk without difficulty. Hindi-speaking assistance is available through Trip Thai Tour — contact us via WhatsApp when booking if you need a Hindi-speaking liaison for your group.

Travellers on a short Koh Samui stay

The half day format — four hours at the sanctuary plus transfers — is designed for travellers who want a meaningful experience without sacrificing a full island day. Morning session guests are back at their hotel before early afternoon with the rest of the day free. Afternoon session guests can spend their morning at the beach or on a boat trip before their pickup. The experience fits comfortably into a 3 or 4-night Koh Samui itinerary.

Pregnant guests and those with mobility concerns

The tour involves walking on uneven jungle terrain for one to two hours total. Most guests manage this without difficulty, including those in their 70s. If you are pregnant or have specific mobility concerns, please contact us via WhatsApp before booking so we can advise on the best session and exactly what to expect on the terrain.

    What if it rains?

The sanctuary operates every day of the year including public holidays and during the rainy season. Elephants actively enjoy wet conditions and the mud spa becomes even more entertaining in the rain. You cannot cancel due to weather. If a severe tropical storm creates a genuine safety issue, the sanctuary will notify us and we will contact you directly. This is extremely rare and has not affected the Koh Samui site.

Yes, hotel pickup and drop-off is included in the tour price from all standard hotels and resorts across Koh Samui. There are no hidden transport fees.

The only exception is if you need a drop-off at the airport or pier after the tour instead of returning to your hotel — this is available at 500–800 THB per group and must be arranged in advance. Pickup is also not available from private villas, Airbnb properties, or hillside houses. Contact us via WhatsApp if your accommodation is non-standard and we will arrange the nearest meeting point.

Families with young children typically prefer the morning session to avoid peak afternoon heat. Both sessions are equally popular with couples and adults. Message us on WhatsApp and we will advise based on your hotel location and plans for the rest of your day.

Yes — this is one of the most popular family activities on Koh Samui. Children aged 6 and above can fully participate in all activities including feeding, the mud spa, and elephant bathing. Children under 6 are welcome with close parental supervision throughout.

Do not wear white clothing, good shoes, or anything you are not happy to ruin. Shower facilities are available at the sanctuary before the meal at the end of the session.

The sanctuary program itself runs approximately 3 to 4 hours. Total time from hotel pickup to hotel drop-off is typically 4.5 to 5.5 hours depending on your hotel location and traffic.

Morning session guests are usually back at their hotel by 12:30 PM. Afternoon session guests are usually back by 5:00 PM. Times at the sanctuary are flexible — guides prioritise time with the elephants over a strict clock.

A traditional Thai meal is included — lunch for the morning session, dinner for the afternoon session. The meal typically includes freshly cooked Pad Thai, jasmine rice, and seasonal tropical fruit. No additional food charge applies.

Vegetarian options are available. If you have dietary requirements or allergies, please inform us at the time of booking via WhatsApp and we will pass this to the sanctuary kitchen in advance.

Two optional add-ons are available. Karen traditional attire rental lets you wear traditional hill tribe clothing during your elephant interaction — popular for photos and connects to the Karen community's historic relationship with elephants in Thailand.
