Koh Samui Snorkeling — Wooden Trawler Boat Trip
Last updated: July 2026

The van drops you at Petcharat Marina just before nine, and there she is: an elegant wooden trawler with rope-wrapped rails and floating beanbags stacked on deck, nothing like the packed white speedboats loading tourists three piers down. A crew member presses a chilled fresh coconut into your hand before you have even found your seat. This is the Koh Samui boat trip people mean when they say they want a day on the water — not a shuttle to a crowded island, but half a day of sun, sea and smiles with fewer than fifteen guests aboard.
This half-day snorkeling trip cruises the northern coast of Koh Samui past the golden Big Buddha for photo stops, then anchors off Silver Beach — one of the island's calmest and clearest near-shore snorkel spots — where you snorkel over the reef, float on double beanbags, and take a dinghy ashore. Snorkel equipment is provided for every guest, kids aged 4–11 get a supervised snorkeling course, and a gourmet lunch is served on deck with seasonal fruit. Roundtrip hotel transfer, a professional guide, safety briefing, and travel & medical insurance are all included in the price.
The half-day trip is ฿3,050 per adult and ฿2,050 per child (4–11). Prefer the golden hour? The same wooden trawler runs a romantic Sunset Cruise from ฿2,650 per adult — rooftop beanbags, sundowner snacks, a swim in a sheltered bay, cocktails and live music. Free hotel pickup is included from every major area of Koh Samui. Book via WhatsApp +66 89 949 6235 — we confirm your date, pickup window and meal choice the same day.

The most common mistake visitors make when booking a Koh Samui boat trip is choosing on price alone and ending up on an overloaded speedboat that races between crowded island stops with fifty other people, a rushed twenty minutes in the water, and a paper plate of fried rice at a packed beach. Snorkel gear, national-park fees, insurance and a proper lunch are often extra, quietly added at the pier once you have already paid.
This trip is deliberately the opposite. The wooden trawler carries a maximum of fifteen guests, so there is room to move, lie down, and actually relax. The pace is slow and the anchorage at Silver Beach is calm and shallow enough for first-time snorkelers and children. Everything that matters — snorkel equipment, a gourmet lunch you choose yourself, floating beanbags, a welcome coconut, soft drinks, and travel and medical insurance — is included in the price you see, with nothing sprung on you at the marina.
Please note - Read Important (Click to expand)▼
- Minimum 2 guests, maximum 15 on the boat. Solo travellers are welcome — contact us via WhatsApp and we will advise on the best available date.
- This is a shared join-in trip. You share the wooden trawler with other guests (never more than 15 total). For the boat to yourselves, ask about the weekend private charter.
- Punctuality matters: if you are more than 15 minutes late for your scheduled pickup the van cannot wait, as it must keep the whole group's departure on time. Please be ready in your lobby at the start of your pickup window.
- You will get wet. Bring a swimsuit worn under your clothes, a towel and a full change of clothes for the return van. A dry bag or waterproof phone case is recommended for the snorkeling stop.
- The half-day trip and sunset cruise both run daily. Choose your meal from the eight-dish menu when you book so the galley can prepare it. Let us know of any allergies or dietary needs in advance.
What to Bring — Don't Forget These
- • Swimsuit worn under your clothes — the boat heads to the snorkeling anchorage soon after departure
- • Towel and a full change of clothes for the return van transfer
- • Coral-safe (reef-safe) sunscreen — kinder to the reef at Silver Beach, and a hat and sunglasses for the open deck
- • A dry bag or waterproof phone case for your camera at the snorkeling and swim stops
- • Cash in Thai Baht for optional onboard beer or piña coladas and for crew gratuities — lunch, snorkel gear and soft drinks are already included
- • Any personal medication, plus motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to seasickness on smaller boats

What Actually Happens
Pickup, the Drive, and Boarding at Petcharat Marina
Your day starts with a van collection from your hotel lobby in a staggered window that depends on where you are staying. Guests on the north and west side — Lipa Noi, Nathon, Bang Po, Ban Tai, Maenam, Bophut, Bang Rak, Choeng Mon — are collected between 07:00 and 08:15, and guests on the south and east side — Chaweng, Chaweng Noi, Lamai, Hua Thanon, Bang Kao — in a matching window. Your driver knows your zone and exact pickup time before the day begins, so all you need to do is be ready in the lobby at the start of your slot. The drive winds along the island's coast road toward Bang Rak in the northeast, where Petcharat Marina sits. Petcharat Marina is the busiest marine hub on Koh Samui, and the first thing you notice is how different your boat is from the rest. While rows of white speedboats load forty passengers at a time, you walk toward an elegant wooden trawler with a maximum of fifteen guests, floating beanbags stacked on the deck, and a crew that greets you by name. Before you have even chosen a seat, a crew member hands you a chilled fresh coconut to sip. The captain and guide run a short, friendly safety briefing — where the life jackets are, how the snorkel gear works, and the plan for the morning — and hand out trip wristbands. Travel and medical insurance is already in place for every guest. By 09:00 the lines are cast off and the trawler eases out of the marina into the calm morning water of the Gulf of Thailand, the island's green hills rising behind you and the whole day still ahead.
Casting Off — the Big Buddha Coastal Cruise
The first stretch of the trip is a slow, scenic cruise along Koh Samui's northeastern coastline, and it is deliberately unhurried. This is a wooden trawler, not a speedboat, so instead of slamming across the waves you glide, which means you can actually stand at the rail, feel the breeze, and take photographs without holding on for dear life. The crew points out landmarks as they pass, and the highlight of this leg is the Big Buddha — Wat Phra Yai — a 12-metre golden seated Buddha built in 1972 on the small island of Koh Faan, connected to Samui by a causeway. From the water you get the view most visitors never see: the statue glowing on its headland above the temple rooftops, framed by palm trees and sky. The crew slows for photo stops at the best angles, and this is where the small group size pays off — there is no scrum for the rail, no waiting your turn. Floating beanbags come out for anyone who would rather lie back than shoot photos, and the soft drinks and water are free-flowing. If you want something stronger, cold beer and the crew's signature piña coladas are available to buy onboard, though plenty of guests save those for the ride home. The mood on this part of the trip is the whole reason people choose a wooden trawler over a packed speedboat: it feels like being on a friend's boat rather than a shuttle service. By the time the trawler noses toward the snorkeling anchorage, you have already had the kind of morning that most Koh Samui day-trippers never get.
Silver Beach — Snorkeling, Floating Beanbags, and the Dinghy Ashore
The trawler anchors off Silver Beach — known in Thai as Thong Takian — a small, protected cove tucked between Chaweng and Lamai on Koh Samui's east coast. It is one of the island's most reliable near-shore snorkel spots precisely because it is calm and clear: sheltered from the main swell, with shallow water over rock and coral close to the surface, and visibility that on a good day stretches well beyond the reef. This is not a deep, current-swept dive site — and that is the point. It is exactly the kind of gentle, forgiving water where a first-time snorkeler, a nervous swimmer, or a child can put their face in the sea and immediately see fish. The crew hands out snorkel equipment sized for every guest, along with life jackets for anyone who wants one. Children aged 4 to 11 get a supervised snorkeling course — a patient, hands-on introduction that gets them comfortable breathing through the snorkel and floating before they explore. Over the reef you will typically see shoals of small reef fish, sergeant majors, wrasse and the occasional larger visitor moving through the shallows. When you have had enough of the water, the double floating beanbags are tethered off the stern for lounging, and the crew runs a dinghy to take guests ashore onto Silver Beach itself to stand on the sand, wade, or simply take photos. There is no rush and no whistle — you move between the reef, the beanbags and the beach at your own pace while the galley gets lunch ready onboard.
Lunch on the Water — Your Choice of Eight, and the Afternoon Sun
One detail sets this trip apart from almost every other boat tour on the island: you choose your own lunch. Rather than a single shared tray of fried rice, the galley prepares a gourmet dish selected by each guest from a menu of eight — Salmon and egg wrap, Salad chicken wrap, Big salad wrap, Teriyaki beef, Sesame salmon, Beef bolognese, Fried rice with chicken, or Veggie pesto pasta — served with fresh seasonal fruit. There are genuine vegetarian options (the big salad wrap and the veggie pesto pasta) and pescatarian choices (the salmon dishes), and there is no pork on the menu at all, which makes it straightforward for most dietary needs. You pick your dish when you book so the crew can prepare it fresh; flag any allergy or requirement at the same time and they will accommodate it. Lunch is served on deck as the trawler sits at anchor, and it turns into the easy, social centre of the day. Soft drinks and water keep coming, and this is when the beer and piña coladas tend to appear for the guests who want them. After eating there is time to swim again, dry off on the beanbags, and soak up the sun before the boat weighs anchor. Because the group is small, the crew often knows everyone's names by now, and the return leg has the relaxed feeling of a day out among friends rather than a tour that is hurrying you back to sell the next departure. From around 14:00 the trawler cruises back toward Petcharat Marina.
The Return, and How the Sunset Cruise Compares
Back at Petcharat Marina, your van is waiting to run you home along the same coast road, dropping you at your hotel by mid-afternoon with the rest of the day free — enough time for a shower, a nap, and dinner, or to head straight to the beach. The whole half-day trip runs about five hours from pickup to drop-off, and it is designed to leave you relaxed rather than exhausted. If your ideal day on the water is golden light rather than midday sun, the same wooden trawler runs a Sunset Cruise from ฿2,650 per adult (฿1,650 per child). Pickups begin around 14:00; the boat departs the marina at 16:00 for a golden-hour coastal cruise with rooftop beanbags and sundowner snacks, then anchors in a sheltered bay where you can swim, sip a cocktail and listen to live music as the sun drops into the Gulf of Thailand. A chef's spread of light evening bites is served on deck before the trawler returns and the van drops you home by around 20:00. It is the more romantic, couples-focused option — many guests book the snorkeling trip for one day of their stay and the sunset cruise for another. To book either, or to ask about a weekend private charter of the whole boat, message us on WhatsApp +66 89 949 6235 or browse more Koh Samui tours.
Is This Right for You?
✦ Couples and honeymooners
Koh Samui is a honeymoon island, and this trip suits couples perfectly — a small, unhurried wooden boat instead of a crowded speedboat, floating beanbags, and a gourmet lunch on deck. For a truly romantic day, pair the half-day snorkeling trip with the Sunset Cruise on the same trawler: golden light, cocktails and live music in a sheltered bay. Ask us about a weekend private charter if you want the whole boat to yourselves.
✦ Families with children
This is one of the easiest boat trips on the island for families. Children aged 4–11 get a free supervised snorkeling course, snorkel gear and life jackets are provided for every guest, and Silver Beach is calm and shallow enough for young or nervous swimmers. The dinghy ride ashore and the floating beanbags are a hit with kids, and the choose-your-own lunch means fussy eaters are covered. Child price is ฿2,050 on the half-day trip.
✦ Beginner and nervous snorkelers
If you have never snorkeled — or last tried it years ago and found it stressful — Silver Beach is the ideal place to start. The water is sheltered, clear and shallow, life jackets are available, and the crew give a full safety briefing and stay close. There is no pressure and no deep water. You can float on a beanbag and ease in at your own pace, which is exactly why this trip works for first-timers when a fast island-hopping tour would not.
✦ Photographers and sunset chasers
The unhurried coastal cruise past the golden Big Buddha, the wooden-trawler aesthetic, and the calm anchorage at Silver Beach all make for far better photos than a spray-soaked speedboat allows. If your priority is golden-hour light, choose the Sunset Cruise on the same boat — rooftop beanbags, a sheltered swim stop, and the sun setting over the Gulf of Thailand from an elegant wooden deck.
✦ Worldwide travellers with dietary needs
Guests come from the UK, Europe, Australia, the USA and the Gulf, and the eight-dish lunch menu makes it easy to eat well: there are vegetarian options (big salad wrap, veggie pesto pasta), pescatarian choices, and no pork on the menu at all. Soft drinks are included; beer and cocktails are optional extras bought onboard, so the trip works equally for guests who do and do not drink. Tell us your choice and any allergies when you book.
✦ Groups of friends and small celebrations
With a maximum of 15 guests the boat suits a group who want space to spread out and a day that feels like their own. For birthdays, reunions or a special occasion, ask about the weekend private charter — the whole wooden trawler with a tailor-made itinerary, chef menu, dedicated crew and private dinghy transfers, available Saturdays and Sundays.
What Our Guests Say
"Exactly what we wanted — a proper wooden boat, not a speedboat cattle-run. Fifteen of us at most, chilled coconut on arrival, and the crew were brilliant. The snorkeling at Silver Beach was calm and clear and I'm not a confident swimmer. We booked the sunset cruise two days later, just as good."
"Our two kids (6 and 9) did the supervised snorkel course and loved it — life jackets and gear all provided, very safe. Being able to choose lunch off a menu meant even our picky eater was happy. Pickup was on time and the whole day was relaxed, not rushed."
"Best value day I had on Samui. Everything actually included — no surprise fees at the pier like the cheaper trips. The floating beanbags and the Big Buddha cruise were the highlights. Small group means you're not fighting for space. Highly recommend."
"We were four friends and wanted a relaxed boat day. No pork on the menu and good vegetarian options made it easy for us. The crew were welcoming, the coconut welcome was a lovely touch, and Silver Beach was beautiful. Would come back for the private charter next time."

The half-day trip (฿3,050 adult) is a daytime snorkeling experience — Big Buddha coastal cruise, snorkeling and swimming at Silver Beach, floating beanbags and a full gourmet lunch, departing at 09:00.
The Sunset Cruise (฿2,650 adult) is a shorter evening cruise focused on golden-hour scenery and romance — rooftop beanbags, sundowner snacks, a swim in a sheltered bay, cocktails, live music and light evening bites, departing at 16:00. Both use the same wooden trawler. Many guests book one of each on different days.
Yes — free roundtrip hotel transfer by van is included from all major Koh Samui areas. North and west side zones include Lipa Noi, Nathon, Bang Po, Ban Tai, Maenam, Bophut, Bang Rak, Choeng Mon and Plai Laem; south and east side zones include Chaweng, Chaweng Noi, Lamai, Hua Thanon and Bang Kao.

Snorkel gear, life jackets, lunch and soft drinks are all provided, so you only need cash in Thai Baht for optional onboard beer or piña coladas and crew gratuities. Bring motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to seasickness.
It is a shared join-in trip: you share the wooden trawler with other guests, but never more than 15 people in total, so it stays uncrowded and relaxed — a world away from a packed 40-seat speedboat.
If you want the whole boat to yourselves, ask about the weekend private charter (Saturdays and Sundays), which comes with a tailor-made itinerary, chef menu and dedicated crew. Contact us via WhatsApp for a custom quote.
Cancellations from 7:00 PM the night before departure are charged at 100%, because by then the boat, crew and shared van route are committed. A no-show, or arriving more than 15 minutes after your scheduled pickup, is also charged at 100%, as the van cannot wait and delay the whole group.
If you have a fever or an accident, send us a doctor's certificate and you will receive a full 100% refund. Please message us on WhatsApp +66 89 949 6235 as early as possible if your plans change so we can try to help reschedule.
The trip runs year-round, with the calmest, clearest conditions from roughly December to April. Koh Samui's main rains come later in the year, around October to December, but many days outside that window are still fine for boating.
Safety comes first: if the sea is genuinely unsafe on your date, the operator will contact us and we will offer you a reschedule or a full refund. You will never be sent out in dangerous conditions.
