Chiang Mai Private Car & Van with Driver — 8 Hours at Your Disposal, Unlimited Stops

Every city we operate in has its own transport economics, and Chiang Mai's produce the sharpest value gap of the five. The established local rate for a full-day car with an English-speaking driver, fuel included, is ฿3,000. The vehicle that comes with that price typically seats three passengers. Longer or further-afield days are quoted around ฿3,500, and extra hours are usually ฿300. That is a fair price for what it is, and northern drivers are not overcharging — it reflects a fleet built mostly of saloon cars and small SUVs serving couples and solo travellers. The problem is what happens when your party grows. A family of five gets quoted two cars. A group of eight gets three. The cost of a day out multiplies with the size of your group for no reason connected to the actual work being done, and you end up split across vehicles, arriving at each stop at different times. Our van costs the same ฿3,000 and seats ten. Our SUV costs ฿2,500 and seats four. The practical effect: a couple pays ฿2,500 instead of ฿3,000; a family of six pays ฿3,000 total, or ฿500 each, instead of ฿6,000 across two cars; a group of ten pays ฿3,000 total, or ฿300 each, instead of ฿9,000 across three. And everybody travels together. We can do this because we price the vehicle at what it costs to run, at the same flat rate in all five cities, rather than at what each local market has settled on. The one place the local rate is genuinely competitive is a couple in a small car, where ฿3,000 for three seats and our ฿2,500 for four are close — and even then you are getting an extra seat, air-conditioning designed for a full load, and the Doi Suthep mountain road included rather than negotiated.

Your driver arrives at your hotel door at the time you choose. The night before, you receive a WhatsApp message with his name, his mobile number and the vehicle's plate. The eight hours begin when you pull away from the hotel — not when the driver left the depot, and not when he arrived in your car park. A 09:00 pickup means a 17:00 drop-off. Chiang Mai has two sensible start times and they lead to quite different days. An early start, around 07:30 to 08:30, is the right answer if Doi Suthep matters to you. The temple opens at 06:00, the coaches arrive from mid-morning, and the mountain air is clearest before the valley haze builds — which matters a great deal between February and April, when the northern burning season can reduce the famous view over the city to a white blur by lunchtime. Go up first, come down into the Old City temples by late morning, and have the afternoon for Nimman or the markets. A later start, around midday, suits the market days. The Sunday Walking Street along Ratchadamnoen and the Saturday Wua Lai market both begin in the late afternoon and run into the evening, and they are among the best things Chiang Mai does. Starting at noon gives you the Old City temples in the afternoon, dinner from market stalls, and the full evening — usually with an extra hour or two on the clock at ฿400 for the van or ฿300 for the SUV. The split day is the third option and works well with children: temples and mountain in the morning, back to the hotel through the hot middle of the day, then out again for the evening market. The clock runs through the rest, but for many families that is a fair trade. Around the seven-hour mark your driver will ask whether to finish or continue. There is no advance commitment and no evening premium, so the decision can genuinely wait until you are standing in a night market deciding whether you are done.

Chiang Mai divides cleanly into things a vehicle unlocks and things you should walk. Knowing which is which is most of a good day. Walk the Old City. Inside the moat, Wat Phra Singh (founded 1345, holding the revered Phra Singh Buddha), Wat Chedi Luang (its enormous 14th-century chedi partially collapsed in a 16th-century earthquake and left magnificently ruined) and a dozen smaller temples sit within a square mile. Most are free or ฿20–50. Your driver drops you at one end and collects you at the other — no parking, no walking back. Drive the mountain. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is about 15 kilometres and 30 to 45 minutes up a switchback road, and it is the single reason most people want a vehicle here. Entry is ฿30 for foreign visitors; the 306-step naga staircase is the traditional approach, or ฿20 takes the funicular. It opens at 06:00 and closes at 20:00. The mountain road is included in our price. Drive the east. The Bo Sang umbrella village and the San Kamphaeng silver and celadon workshops stretch along a road no songthaew serves usefully. This is also the road most lined with commission showrooms, so it is worth saying plainly: we stop only where you ask, and your driver will tell you honestly which workshops are working craft studios and which are sales floors dressed up as one. Drive the rest. Nimmanhaemin's cafés and boutiques, the Warorot market, the riverside restaurants, and the Sunday or Saturday walking streets. What does not fit — and this is the important part. Chiang Rai and the White Temple is roughly three hours each way. Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, is a full mountain day. Pai is 762 curves of winding mountain road that visitors underestimate badly. None of these belong in an eight-hour city charter, and we quote them separately by route rather than folding them in. That is not an upsell — cramming Chiang Rai into this product would mean six hours in a vehicle and ninety minutes at a temple. Elephant sanctuaries are also usually out of town, which is why our sanctuary visits come with their own transfers included.

The SUV costs ฿2,500 and carries up to 4 passengers. The van costs ฿3,000 and carries up to 10. In Chiang Mai the calculation is unusually lopsided in the van's favour, because ฿3,000 is what the local market charges for three seats — so the van is not just better value than our own SUV for larger groups, it is dramatically better value than the alternative you would otherwise be quoted. Take the SUV if you are a couple, a solo traveller, or three or four adults travelling light. It is the better vehicle for the Old City, where the sois inside the moat are narrow, several are one-way, and the streets around Wat Chedi Luang get tight when a coach is unloading. It also takes the Doi Suthep switchbacks more nimbly, which matters if anyone in your group is prone to motion sickness — the climb has a lot of turns. Take the van if there are five or more of you, if you are travelling with grandparents or small children, or if the day involves markets. Ten seats means the whole group travels together rather than being split across two cars that arrive at different times. The space behind the back row absorbs a Sunday Walking Street haul, and if you are visiting Bo Sang it will take the umbrellas, which are larger and more awkward than people expect. One Chiang Mai-specific note: between November and February, Doi Suthep is genuinely cold in the morning — it sits over 1,000 metres up and the temperature difference from the valley is startling. Both vehicles have heating, but bring a layer regardless. The seat numbers are real limits. Ten adults with ten suitcases will not fit comfortably; if you are moving hotels or arriving with full luggage, count your group as one or two larger and tell us at booking. Groups over ten: message us and we will quote two vehicles or a minibus.

Your driver is a professional Thai driver who knows Chiang Mai properly — which way round the moat is moving, where to drop you so you walk the Old City temples in a sensible line rather than doubling back, how the Doi Suthep car park works when the coaches arrive, and where the khao soi is genuinely good rather than merely convenient. He speaks working English, with WhatsApp translation on his phone for anything harder. He is not a tour guide, and we say so deliberately. This is a legal matter rather than modesty. Under Thailand's Tourism Business and Guide Act B.E. 2551, guiding tourists without a licence is an offence carrying penalties of up to ฿500,000 or two years' imprisonment, and guiding is one of the occupations reserved for Thai nationals. Many operators quietly let drivers narrate anyway; we would rather tell you exactly what you are buying. And here is the honest recommendation: if you are going to add a licensed guide anywhere in Thailand, add one in Chiang Mai. This is a 700-year-old Lanna capital, not a resort town, and almost nothing about it is self-explanatory. Why is Wat Chedi Luang's enormous chedi broken? Because a 16th-century earthquake took the top off and it was deliberately left that way. Why does Doi Suthep sit where it does? Because, by legend, a white elephant carrying a Buddha relic was released to choose the site, climbed the mountain, trumpeted three times and died on that spot. What makes a Lanna temple architecturally different from a Bangkok one? Tiered roofs, naga staircases, teak, and a completely separate kingdom's history behind it. Unguided, that is a series of attractive buildings. Guided, it is a coherent story, and guests consistently rate a Chiang Mai guide day as the best ฿2,500 they spent in Thailand.
