Your driver arrives at your hotel door at the time you choose, anywhere on Phuket. The night before, you receive a WhatsApp message with his name, his mobile number and the vehicle's plate, so nobody stands in a lobby guessing which white van is theirs. The eight hours begin when you pull away from the hotel — not when the driver left the depot, and not when he arrived in your car park. A 09:00 pickup means a 17:00 drop-off. On Phuket the start time matters more than in most places, and 08:00 to 09:00 is genuinely the right answer rather than a platitude. The Big Buddha sits about 400 metres up on Nakkerd Hill, and by late morning two things go wrong at once: the haze thickens over Chalong Bay so the 360-degree view softens into white, and the tour coaches arrive. The same is true at Karon Viewpoint. Go early and you get the clear, quiet version of both. The corollary is that Old Town is better later, when the light on the painted shophouses along Thalang Road turns warm, so a well-ordered Phuket day runs roughly hills first, coast second, town last — and your driver will suggest exactly that if you let him. Distance is the other thing to plan around. Phuket runs about 50 kilometres north to south, and the classic sightseeing loop covers 80 to 100 kilometres in total. That is entirely comfortable in eight hours, but it does mean the island punishes indecision in a way a compact city does not: a change of mind that sends you from Rawai back up to Bang Tao costs forty minutes. None of it costs money — there is no kilometre cap — but it costs time, so it is worth telling your driver at pickup which two or three things genuinely matter to you. Around the seven-hour mark he will ask whether to finish or continue. Extra hours are ฿400 for the van and ฿300 for the SUV, agreed on the spot. The most common reason guests extend is Promthep Cape: it is the island's sunset spot, it is at the far southern tip, and a day that started at nine will often want one more hour to end there properly.

This section exists because Phuket's private-transport market runs on add-ons, and knowing them is the difference between comparing quotes honestly and being surprised at the bottom of a hill. The Big Buddha hill fee. The road up Nakkerd Hill is a six-kilometre climb, hard on fuel and harder on a clutch, and it is standard practice here for a driver to ask for around ฿300 extra before making it. Some quote it upfront; many mention it when you are already at the bottom of the road and unlikely to argue. We do not charge it. The hill is part of the island and the island is included. The airport surcharge. Island operators commonly add ฿500 for a pickup or drop at Phuket International, and around ฿1,000 if you request it on the day rather than in advance. We do not add a surcharge — but we also do not include the airport in this product at all, because an airport run is a different job with different timing risk. It is quoted separately by route, and stating that plainly is more honest than burying it. The outer-zone fee. Hotels at Mai Khao in the far north or Nai Harn and Rawai in the far south are often surcharged, because they are thirty to forty minutes from where the vehicles live. Our pickup is island-wide at one price. Patong and Mai Khao cost the same. The extension rate. The island standard is roughly ฿350 per hour, and it is very often described as “subject to availability” — meaning the driver may simply decline if he has another job. Ours is ฿400 for the van or ฿300 for the SUV, unconditional, because your driver is assigned to you for the day rather than slotted between two other bookings. The point of listing these is not to claim other operators are dishonest. Many disclose everything properly. The point is that a ฿2,100 quote and our ฿2,500 quote are not the same product, and you should be able to see why before you decide.

Phuket rewards planning by geography, and the island splits neatly into a few clusters that your driver will group for you. The southern classic is what most first-time visitors want and it fills a day comfortably: Wat Chalong, the island's most revered temple, with its 60-metre Grand Pagoda holding a relic said to be a fragment of the Buddha's bone; the Big Buddha, a 45-metre white-marble figure on Nakkerd Hill that reopened on 3 March 2026 after a landslide closed the access road in August 2024; Karon Viewpoint, where Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches line up in one frame; and Phuket Old Town for the Sino-Portuguese shophouses and the best coffee on the island. Every one of those is free to enter. The sunset variant swaps the order and ends at Promthep Cape, the southernmost headland, which is the island's designated sunset spot and genuinely worth the crowd. Start at ten, do the temples and viewpoints through the afternoon, and finish there — usually with one extra hour on the clock. The beach-and-café day is the other common shape: Kata or Karon in the morning, a long seafood lunch, the giant-lotus Ma Doo Bua café in Thepkrasattri for photographs (about ฿350 per person), and Bang Tao or Surin in the afternoon. With the van, everything stays locked in the vehicle between beaches. The boat day uses the car differently: your driver drops you at Rassada Pier for Phi Phi or Ao Po for James Bond Island, waits with your dry clothes and valuables locked inside, and collects you when the boat returns. What does not fit: Phang Nga and Krabi by road, the airport, and the cruise port are all outside this product. They are quoted by route because they deserve honest transfer pricing rather than being squeezed into a disposal day. The SUV costs ฿2,500 and carries up to 4 passengers. The van costs ฿3,000 and carries up to 10. The gap is ฿500 for a whole day, which makes the van the better buy more often than the seat count alone suggests. Take the SUV if you are a couple, a solo traveller, or three or four adults travelling light. For two people, ฿2,500 is ฿1,250 each for an entire day of private transport with a driver — and on Phuket that comparison is stark, because a single taxi from Patong to Phuket Town and back can run ฿1,200 to ฿1,600 on its own. The SUV also handles the narrow one-way lanes of Old Town and the tight car parks around Rawai more easily than a van, and it takes the Nakkerd Hill climb more comfortably. Take the van if there are five or more of you, if you are travelling with grandparents or small children, or if the day involves beaches. Ten seats means nobody is wedged in for a forty-minute cross-island drive, and the space behind the back row holds beach gear, wet towels, snorkels and shopping without anyone holding anything on their lap. For a family of six the van is ฿500 per person for the whole day; for ten it is ฿300 each. It is also the right call for a boat day, when you want to leave phones, shoes, dry clothes and bags locked in the vehicle at the pier rather than carrying them onto a wet speedboat. The seat numbers are real limits rather than optimistic ones. Ten adults with ten suitcases will not fit comfortably, so if you are changing hotels or arriving with full luggage rather than day bags, count your group as one or two people larger and tell us at booking. We would far rather send the right vehicle than have people standing in a driveway with a luggage problem.

Your driver is a professional Thai driver who knows Phuket properly — which coast the weather is on, which viewpoint is clear at which hour, where a van can actually park in Old Town, and which of the west-coast seafood places is worth the detour rather than merely convenient. He speaks working English: enough for times, directions, recommendations and friendly conversation, with WhatsApp translation on his phone for anything harder. He is not a tour guide, and we say so on purpose. This is a legal matter, not modesty. Under Thailand's Tourism Business and Guide Act B.E. 2551, guiding tourists without a licence is an offence carrying penalties of up to ฿500,000 or two years' imprisonment, and guiding is one of the occupations reserved for Thai nationals. Plenty of operators quietly let drivers narrate temples anyway, which exposes the driver to real risk and gives you history of uncertain accuracy. We would rather tell you exactly what you are buying. If you want the commentary, add a licensed English-speaking guide for ฿2,500 for the whole day — for the group, not per person. On Phuket it pays off in two specific places. At Wat Chalong, a guide turns a pretty gold temple into the story of Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, the two monks who tended the wounded during the Chinese tin-miners' rebellion of 1876 and whom islanders still petition for healing — which also explains the firecrackers you will hear going off in the brick kiln beside the shrine. In Old Town, a guide explains why a Thai island has streets of Sino-Portuguese shophouses at all: tin money, Hokkien Chinese and Peranakan merchants, and a boom that built the pastel facades along Thalang Road and Soi Romanee. For a beach day, a boat day or a shopping day, a guide adds little and most guests skip it happily. Nothing is lost either way and the vehicle price does not change.
